Tottenham handed major boost as two key players return to first-team training ahead of Europa League clash against Elfsborg

Tottenham handed major boost as two key players return to first-team training ahead of Europa League clash against Elfsborg

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Micky Van De Ven took part in Tottenham training ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie at home to Elfsborg.

Van De Ven has not featured for Spurs since December 8 against Chelsea when he suffered a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury which had already sidelined him for five weeks.

Meanwhile, Vicario has not played since he injured his ankle during a 4-0 win over Manchester City on November 23.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou faced the media on Wednesday afternoon and provided an update on how close the pair are to being available again.

Under-pressure Postecoglou revealed Tottenham defender Van De Ven was set to return in Thursday’s tie.

‘Micky is good, he’s good to go,’ Postecoglou confirmed. ‘We’ll try to get him some match minutes. He’s had a good week, 10 days with the team.’

Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma are set to feature after recent knocks, but James Maddison is the latest on the treatment table with a calf problem.

Postecoglou added: ‘Madders has a calf strain – two to three weeks. Pape is OK, still a bit of a niggle, but he’s OK and available and Biss is available too.’

Dejan Kulusevski has no doubt Postecoglou is the right person to lead Tottenham through this difficult period.

Spurs have dropped to 15th in the Premier League, but remain in three cup competitions and Postecoglou believes they can achieve ‘something special’ this season.

‘Yeah I agree with him,’ Kulusevski insisted. ‘Three cups, we’re doing really well in the cups. I think we can do big things in these last four months.’

Asked why Postecoglou was the right man, Kulusevski added: ‘Because we had games where we showed perfect football and football not many teams can play in the world.

‘We played beautiful against (Manchester) United, City away 4-0 and yeah we’re behind him. I have to fight for him because I believe in that football too. Yeah, he is the right man.’
