Manchester United flop Antony was named the man of the match on his Real Betis debut after recording an early assist in their 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao last night.

The winger, who has joined the LaLiga club for the rest of the season after a dismal two-and-a-half-year stint at Old Trafford, saw a shot saved before Isco prodded in.

That saw him chalk up his first goal contribution in Spain just 15 minutes into the game, and on the same evening his parent side slumped to defeat by Crystal Palace.

Antony joined United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax for a staggering £86million fee but was unable to live up his hefty price tag under Erik ten Hag.

He made 96 appearances in all competitions but scored just 12 goals, and after being overlooked by Ruben Amorim, he was afforded the chance to switch to Seville.

Real Betis were pegged back twice, denying Antony a win in his first game, but their new winger was handed the LaLiga MVP award at the final whistle.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: ‘Let’s go for more! Happy to be elected MVP!!!’

The wideman had pulled the trigger from the right flank and forced a save from Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon, but Isco followed up to tuck in the rebound.

After making an instant impact, Antony then celebrated passionately.

He played 72 minutes on his impressive debut, completing 83 per cent of his 24 attempted passes and producing two key passes for his team-mates.

Speaking after the match, boss Manuel Pellegrini praised his performance.

‘Well, I think it was a very positive debut,’ said Pellegrini. ‘He’s a quality player.

‘I was talking to him just before the game. I think a good player doesn’t have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball. He has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross.

‘I think he was very involved today, especially with the second goal. He had just arrived a couple of days before and I think he’s going to contribute a lot to us.’
