Lewis Hamilton has splashed out on a gift for his former colleagues at Mercedes after 12 years with the German manufacturer.

The 40-year-old won six Driver’s Championships with Mercedes and helped in its transformation to one of the biggest teams in the sport.

He departed for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season after penning a £50million-per-year deal with the Italian constructor.

Hamilton commissioned a special artwork for all 3,000 of his former colleagues. He arranged for renowned motorsport artist Paul Oz to create a painting depicting his car at the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix.

Each member of staff received their own print of the artwork, while the original oil painting hangs at the team’s Brackley headquarters.

‘Now that it’s public knowledge and all 3000 Mercedes GP employees have received their prints of this, I can talk about it,’ Oz posted said in an Instagram post that has since been deleted.

‘Commissioned by Lewis himself as a departing present for everybody at Mercedes… class act!

‘My only remit was that I should focus on the car rather than Lewis, and so I chose to paint an image from Monaco 2019, just a few days after Niki Lauda passed and the team ran a red halo to remember Niki. Lewis stuck it on pole then dominated the race.’

Oz is a renowned motorsport artist having most notably created the busts of Bruce McLaren, Ayrton Senna, James Hunt and Niki Lauda at McLaren’s base in Woking.

Hamilton is currently on pre-season testing with his new team in Barcelona ahead of his maiden season with the record Constructors championship winners. The new Formula One season gets underway in Bahrain on February 26.
