FA keen to seal new Gareth Southgate deal until 2026 after he hinted he could be tempted to sign new contract to extend stay as Three Lions manager

The FA want Gareth Southgate to extend his contract until the 2026 World Cup, following Friday’s revelation that he could be tempted to stay on beyond this summer’s European Championship.

The England manager disclosed at the UEFA Nations League draw that he has yet to decide on his future and hinted he could be persuaded extend his reign to 10 years.

Southgate’s contract expires in December after he signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal following the delayed 2021 Euros, with the FA giving him an additional six months to avoid speculation over the job overshadowing this year’s tournament.

He came close to walking away after last year’s World Cup but was persuaded to stay due to his excitement at working with a talented group of players he believes can end England’s 48-year wait for a major trophy this summer.

Southgate’s comments were well-received by his bosses, who regard him as the perfect manager given his on-field success and off-field leadership.

The shortage of credible homegrown candidates to replace Southgate, which would be the FA’s preference, is another issue for the governing body.

Under 21 manager Lee Carsley is admired but lacks experience at the highest level, and Eddie Howe is committed to Newcastle.

Steve Cooper, who led England to glory at the 2017 Under 17 World Cup, is eager to return to club football after being sacked by Nottingham Forest.
