Formula One star Nico Hulkenberg suffered a freak eye injury in a bizarre garage incident on Wednesday.

The German driver was forced to miss the post-session press conference as he needed urgent medical assistance.

According to Sky Germany, a ‘speck of dust or sand’ got stuck in Hulkenberg’s eye during the mechanics works in the team garage.

It is understood that Sauber mechanics were carrying out grinding work on the C45 car before a splinter entered Hulkenberg’s eye.

It came after the Formula One star completed 55 laps, with a best time of 1:32.169 but was forced to withdraw early and seek urgent treatment.

However, it is understood that the issue was not serious and the Sauber driver appeared on the second day of testing.

Hulkenberg returned to the grips following his departure from Haas following two years in collaboration.

However, he was used as substitute for the American team on several occasions, such as in 2023, when the German replaced Mick Schumacher, who was sidelined.

Overall his illustrious career, he drove from Williams, Force India, Sauber, Renault, Racing Point, Aston Martin and Haas.

Hulkenberg and team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto, the Formula Two champion of last year, formed the new driver line-up at the Switzerland based-team, replacing Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.
