Manchester United fans gave Ruben Amorim a toasty greeting at Old Trafford with a large banner welcoming him in Portuguese.

Supporters in the Stretford end unfurled a banner in red, white, and black which read ‘Welcome home Ruben’ on Thursday night.

Amorim was taking charge of his first home game against Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, and won 3-2, having drawn his debut Premier League assignment 1-1 at Ipswich on Sunday.

It had taken the United faithful just minutes to chant his name at Portman Road and they ensured the Sporting Lisbon import felt warmly received at his new abode.

They were rewarded inside 50 seconds as Alejandro Garnacho prodded into an empty net after Rasmus Hojlund had pressed goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin into a calamitous error.

Amorim had said in his first interview with the Red Devils that he felt ‘at home’ and is aiming to bring back ‘titles’ to M16.

Bodo/Glimt were determined to be the party poopers and and stunned the hosts when they took the lead with a four-minute salvo of goals from Hakon Evjen and Philip Zinckernagel in the first half.

But Rasmus Hojlund equalised on the stroke of half-time and then added a second five minutes after half-time to give United a 3-2 lead.

That was his third brace at the club after joining for £72million and proved to be sufficient to give Amorim his first win and propel United up the Europa League standings.

Bodo/Glimt were presented with a late free-kick from close range after a Casemiro yellow card but Andre Onana produced a cat-like save to deny Patrick Berg a dream equaliser.
