A Sporting Lisbon source has responded to claims that Ruben Amorim’s move to Manchester United is ‘done’.

Mail Sport reported on Wednesday night that United are closing in on sealing the services of Amorim, 39, on a two-and-a-half year deal to replace Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils have agreed to pay Sporting £9.2m in compensation, with Amorim expected to join the club after the November international break, and Ineos director Sir Dave Brailsford appeared to confirm the deal on Wednesday night when he told fans outside Old Trafford ‘yeah, it’s done’ following United’s 5-2 win over Leicester.

But an official Sporting source has insisted an agreement is yet to be reached between the two clubs for Amorim, with Sporting yet to receive a fee for the Portuguese boss’s contract to be terminated, as reported by A Bola.

It is understood that a deal is edging nearer, with two of Amorim’s assistants, Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido, expected to join him at United, but an agreement is yet to be finalised, according to reports in Portugal.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to remain in interim charge for United’s next three matches as they look to finalise a deal for Amorim

With United still working to complete their swoop for Amorim, Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of the team for their Carabao Cup tie against Leicester on Wednesday night.

United delivered a dominant performance in their first outing since Ten Hag’s sacking, as Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both scored twice, while Alejandro Garnacho also got on the scoresheet.

The 13-time Premier League champions are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals where they will visit Tottenham after the north London club edged past Manchester City 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

After quickly turning their attention to Amorim following the decision to relieve Ten Hag of his duties, it appeared United could get their man through the door in time for their league clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

However, Amorim is now set to stay at Sporting for their next three matches as he sees out his notice period with the club.

As a result, Van Nistelrooy is in line to remain at the helm on an interim basis for United’s next three fixtures against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester.

Barring any setbacks, Amorim would then officially start at Old Trafford after next month’s international break and be in position for his first game at United when they travel to Ipswich on November 24.
