Manchester United have reportedly enquired about Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane – but could face a showdown with Arsenal for his signature.

Sane’s contract is expiring in the summer and after losing his place to Michael Olise he has reportedly considered leaving.

The explosive former Manchester City star has won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern, scoring 51 goals and creating 50 assists since joining in 2020 for £55million.

United’s interest in him has been reported a couple of times down the years while Arsenal were keeping tabs on him over the summer according to Sky Germany.

Now Bild have claimed that both clubs could compete for his services over the summer, though he is still negotiating over extending his stay in Bavaria. Reports have said he is keen to stay at the Allianz Arena.

Football finance website Capology claims that Sane pockets around £16.6m per season with the German powerhouses, making him one of their highest earners alongside Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, and Thomas Muller.

While his stock has fallen over the past year due to inconsistent form, securing a 28-year-old Sane on a free would be a major coup for either side.

Once the fastest player in Premier League history, the winger won two Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola before leaving for a fresh challenge in Germany.

He struck up an intuitive understanding with Kane when the Englishman arrived in summer 2023 and has stepped up on big occasions for Bayern.

Sane scored a fantastic goal in last season’s Champons League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

Staying fit has been a headache for the German, though.

Transfermarkt lists seven separate injuries for him last season and he has already had two lay-offs since the summer, though he has been fit since early September.

He had successful groin surgery in July after bouts of pelvic pain last campaign.

Particularly noted for his speed over short and long distances, Sane can play on both flanks but has typically gone on the right with Serge Gnabry on the left for Bayern.

He left City in 2020 because he felt that Bayern’s style catered to him more and Guardiola has only ever been full of praise for him.

‘Sane is the best in the world playing out wide,’ Guardiola said in 2019, hailing him as an ‘incredible player’.

However, he has been displaced by ex-Crystal Palace man Olise this campaign and is only getting a chance to prove himself off the bench – something few elite stars tend to countenance for long.
