Bruno Fernandes reveals why Alejandro Garnacho did NOT celebrate his wonder goal in Man United’s 3-0 win over Leicester – as Red Devils captain hails the Argentine as a ‘special player’

Bruno Fernandes reveals why Alejandro Garnacho did NOT celebrate his wonder goal in Man United’s 3-0 win over Leicester – as Red Devils captain hails the Argentine as a ‘special player’

Alejandro Garnacho believes some Manchester United fans have lost faith in him, which is why he chose not to celebrate his latest goal, revealed captain Bruno Fernandes.

Garnacho was engaged in a frosty exchange with a fan prior to the midweek Europa League game against PAOK in which the Argentine was told he doesn’t pass to team-mates enough.

It has been an up-and-down campaign so far for Garnacho having missed a series of big chances in the Premier League and he lost his place here to Marcus Rashford.

Asked about his exchange with a non-celebrating Garnacho, Fernandes explained that the youngster needs to build his confidence back up.

‘Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans,’ Fernandes told the BBC.

‘I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.

‘I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player and we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games.

‘We want them to score every game but that isn’t going to happen.’

Fernandes produced a man-of-the-match display in what is the final game in charge for interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Fernandes spoke recently of how he called Ten Hag up to apologise for not being at his best.

His goal on Sunday made it four in four under Van Nistelrooy and he is heating up at just the right time with Ruben Amorim walking through the door on Monday.

‘It was a long time that I wasn’t scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games,’ Fernandes said, joking later that Fantasy Football managers will rue the fact his second goal was eventually given as a Viktor Kristiansen own goal.

‘Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve.’

Asked what the future holds for Van Nistelrooy, who has remained coy on whether he will be kept on under Amorim, Fernandes couldn’t speak much more highly of the club’s former striker.

‘Ruud van Nistelrooy fills the club, he loves the club, he wants to bring joy to the players,’ he said.

‘He brought everyone with a smile to the games, he just wanted us to enjoy it. We wanted to say goodbye as a manager for him properly because he did good things for us.

‘It’s a new era, a new manager means everything changes but what hasn’t changed is that this club has to get back to where it belongs.’
