Tottenham have agreed another year’s loan for Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner with a lower option to buy at just £8.5million.

The original loan agreement from January had an option to buy around £15m.

Ange Postecoglou has been delighted with the 28-year old Werner’s contribution and the deal represents good business for Tottenham as they look to make an early impression in the market.

The German forward joined Postecoglou’s side in January and scored two goals in 13 appearances on his return to the Premier League.

Werner is said to be keen to stay at the club and rediscover his form having struggled in recent years.

He endured a difficult time during his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge, failing to display the form that earned him a £53m move to the Blues.

Werner returned to RB Leipzig in 2022 where he scored 11 goals in 35 Bundesliga appearances before joining Tottenham during winter.

His experience and versatility would be a bonus to Tottenham as he is able to operate on both flanks as well as in strike.

Speaking about the possibility of Werner staying, Postecoglou said earlier this month: ‘Timo we signed until the end of the season on loan and he’s part of that strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and can we do it.

‘Are there going to be other gaps and where does Timo fit in with that strategy? So we have a plan in place, and that was irrespective. I think he’s been very good for us.

‘We were short in wide areas. Him coming in was very helpful for us and I think he’s made an impact but in my mind to make those definitive decisions, I still need some clarity about what we’ve got here first.’
