Napoli have reportedly contacted Man United over a possible move for Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 22, is currently on a season-long loan with Getafe and is expected to leave United permanently this summer.

The forward was shipped out from Old Trafford last September after it was mutually agreed he would play no further role with the club following an internal investigation.

This came after criminal allegations against him of attempted rape, assault and coercive control were dropped. The 22-year-old denied all the charges.

Greenwood’s move to Spain was widely criticised but he has been well-supported by Getafe and their fans since his arrival, while he has excelled on the pitch, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances for the LaLiga outfit.

And, according to The Athletic, Napoli have made contact with United over a potential move for the forward this summer.

The report claims Getafe also want to bring the forward, who last played for United in a Premier League game against West Ham on January 22 2022, back for a second loan, but he is expected to receive significant interest from across Europe.

Meanwhile, Greenwood is believed to want to test himself at a higher level next season, with this potentially including clubs competing in European competitions.

Greenwood’s current United contract expires in the summer of 2025, but United have the ability to extend this by a year.

The report goes onto state that the Red Devils would prefer to sell Greenwood, but a second loan has not been ruled out if they are unable to receive a fee that they deem appropriate.

It is widely anticipated that Greenwood will never play for United again, but new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently hinted that the door was not completely closed.

Speaking in February at what was his first public appearance since the purchase of his minority stake in the club was confirmed, the British billionaire said: ‘He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football.

‘So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.

‘He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

‘The process will be: understand the facts, not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.’

Getafe are currently 10th in LaLiga with two games to go, and they are on course to secure their highest finish in four seasons.

Meanwhile, after winning their first Serie A title in 33 years last season, Napoli have endured a dismal and chaotic campaign, with the Italian side currently ninth in the league.
