England and the Republic of Ireland will meet competitively for the first time since 1991 in the next edition of the Nations League.

The English and the Republic are also up against Euro 2004 winners Greece and Finland in Group B2, but their showpiece meeting will see the two neighbours meet for just their seventh competive meeting in the sport’s history.

They avoided a long trip to Kazakhstan under UEFA’s excessive travel restriction rules, with the former Soviet republic placed in Group B3 instead.

The last competitive encounter between England and the Republic was a Euro 92 qualifier at Wembley, where a Niall Quinn goal cancelled out Lee Dixon’s opener.

A friendly match in 1995 at Lansdowne Road had to be abandoned due to crowd trouble, and the teams’ most recent meeting was a November 2020 friendly.

NATIONS LEAGUE – Home nations groups

Steve Clarke’s Scotland are up against Croatia, Portugal and Poland in Group A1, with Group A2 being contested by Italy, Belgium, France, and Israel.

Group A3 will see Bosnia-Herzegovina go toe-to-toe with Netherlands, Hungary, and Germany, with the top flight’s final group made up of Spain, Denmark, Switzerland and Serbia.

Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland were drawn in Group C3, where they will take on Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Belarus.

Other League C sides Sweden, Azerbaijan, Slovakia, and Estonia will play in C1, Romania, Kosovo, Cyprus, and the winner of the play-off game between Lithuania and Gibraltar will play in C2, and C4 is made up of Armenia, Faroe Islands, North Macedonia and Latvia.

There are only two groups in the bottom League D – the first featuring the loser of the Lithuania-Gibraltar play-off, San Marino, and Liechtenstein, and the second made-up of Moldova, Malta, and Andorra.

The league phase will be played between September and October before League A quarter-finals and promotion/relegation play-offs take place in March 2025.

Single-leg semis and a final will be played in June 2025.

Both England and Wales find themselves in League B after Gareth Southgate’s men suffered relegation from their UEFA Nations League group in 2023, with Scotland the highest ranked home nation in League A for the first time.

Every European team will feature in the 2024-25 Nations League with the exemption of Russia as they were suspended.
