Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was spotted with Max Verstappen ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Reds captain and his team-mates endured a difficult end to the season as they missed out on the Premier League title and got dumped out of the Europa League by eventual winners Atalanta.

A number of Premier League players have headed for their holidays already, with some resting up for the Euros which gets underway in just over a fortnight.

Van Dijk has taken a trip to Monaco and spent time with compatriot and Formula One world champion Verstappen.

The pair were seen in deep conversation as they grabbed non-alcoholic beer before heading onto a Red Bull boat, where they continued to talk.

Van Dijk and Verstappen are known to be friends, with the Red Bull driver said to be a supporter of Manchester United.

Van Dijk will captain Holland at the Euros as they seek to win their first trophy in 36 years.

Ronald Koeman’s men will open their campaign against Poland on June 16 before facing France and Austria in Group D.

Meanwhile, Verstappen is chasing his sixth win of what he been yet another dominant campaign so far.

He has twice won on the principality’s famously tight streets but he fears the circuit’s unique demands will not play to the strengths of his Red Bull machinery.

‘It is a different track and not our best because our car struggles off the kerbs and in the low speed,’ Verstappen said.

‘We have worked on that and improved it, but it is not going to be a very easy weekend.’
