Erling Haaland could smash remarkable Cristiano Ronaldo record in Man City’s Champions League tie against Inter Milan following explosive start to the season

Erling Haaland’s incredible start to the new Premier League season could be made even better as he closes in on smashing one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible goal records.

The Norwegian – who has won the Premier League’s golden boot award for the past two seasons – has started Man City’s new campaign in sensational form, scoring nine goals in just four games.

His blistering start has resulted in City players having to sign two match balls after Haaland bagged back-to-back hattricks in the English top-flight and was hailed by manager Pep Guardiola ahead of the Champions League getting underway.

City will mount their charge for a second European title by hosting reigning Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan on Wednesday, with Haaland able to break one of Ronaldo’s many records if he scores in the game.

Manchester United and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo previously reached 100 goals in just 105 games for the Spanish side before going on to recently bag his 900th and 901st goals during the international break with Portugal.

Haaland currently sits on 99 City goals after just 103 appearances, meaning he has just one game remaining to beat Ronaldo to triple digits.

Should the 24-year-old find the back of the net against Simone Inzaghi’s side, he would beat Ronaldo’s record that he achieved during his legendary career at Real Madrid.

However, if the City superstar fails to score then he could equal the five-time Ballon d’Or holder’s record in Sunday’s mouth-watering Premier League clash against title rivals Arsenal.

Meanwhile, City boss Guardiola heaped praise on Haaland’s incredible goalscoring and tipped his striker to continue his stunning run of form.

‘A little bit, yeah,’ he said when asked if he was surprised by the scoring streak.

‘Do you know why? I played for 11 years as a professional and I scored 11 goals. This guy, in four games, has nine. He can equal that in one game.

‘If you tell me that in the next 100 games he will score 99 goals, for me it’s fine. Don’t improve, don’t improve. If he scores 99 goals in the next 100 games, I’ll be more than delighted.

‘I think with the experience of playing game after game, he will improve. It’s difficult to improve if you don’t play. He will be a better player, in a natural way. The difference to last season is that he feels better. He came from Dortmund with a lot of muscular problems and he struggled a bit.

‘So far this season he feels like “I’m clean, I feel good here and no problems”. But every three or four days it’s game, game, game. So I don’t know in one, two or three months’ time. I don’t expect him to score two or three goals in every game. At the moment, it’s going to happen,’ he added.
