While Aussie Oscar Piastri was completing his first ever Formula One win in Hungary overnight, his mother was documenting all the highs and lows of the race in hilarious fashion on social media.
Piastri joined an exclusive club of four other Australian drivers who have won a Formula One Grand Prix, thanks to his recent victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
His win at the Hungaroring marks the 44th time an Australian has triumphed in an F1 race, a legacy that began with Jack Brabham’s victory at the 1959 Monaco Grand Prix.
Before Piastri’s breakthrough, the last Australian F1 win was by Daniel Ricciardo for McLaren at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza in September 2021. Piastri took over Ricciardo’s seat at McLaren at the beginning of 2023.
Back at home in Melbourne, his mother Nicole was nervously watching every minute of the action, with several social media posts to keep her followers entertained.
With the race taking place in the very early hours of the morning in Australia, she first posted images of the family dogs sound asleep despite the excitement around them.
‘Baz and Rosie not quite as excited,’ Nicole wrote.
Then, as Piastri crossed the line and made the victory official, Nicole posted an image of her leaping for job, along with a separate post saying, ‘6am Pilates just cancelled.’

It was a huge night for Nicole and the whole Piastri family, who have been supporting the 23-year-old since his junior go-karting days.
Nicole also appeared on Channel Seven’s Sunrise show on Monday and spoke about her nerves while watching her son race.
‘The girls will tell that I am crazy and I am very anxious,’ she said.
‘But I’ve seen racing mums and I think I am quite reserved compared to them.
‘Oscar and his sisters get far more animated when they play Mario Kart than I do watching my son race around [at] 300km [per hour].
‘I don’t like the start of the race and I don’t like when he has to overtake, but other than that, I’m all right.’

On the win itself, Nicole said the reality of it all was still sinking in.
‘It’s quite surreal, to be honest,’ she said.
‘I mean we’ve been doing this a long time now, but it’s still quite surprising to see him on the TV and thinking wow, that’s my kid.
‘For him, that’s the dream, he’s wanted that since he was a little boy.
‘I don’t know if it changes that much in the future, I think it will just be business as usual.
‘Obviously it will help his confidence but he will just keep going now.’
Nicole also told the Today show that she hadn’t received a call from him despite hours passing since the chequered flag fell.
‘I have not spoken with him him yet – I’m hoping he might see this and decide to ring his mum,’ she joked.
‘He did message to say he would give me a call later on … I will let him off this time.’
Oscar was still pinching himself after a dream weekend that saw him hold off teammate Lando Norris – who was left furious by controversial team orders to let the Aussie past – and Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton.
‘I think it naturally takes people time for it to fully sink in,’ he said.
‘The emotion is still kind of coming through, the adrenaline is still flowing.’
