Oscar Piastri sends message to fans – including the one who gave him a lucky €5 note – as he reflects on winning the Hungarian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri sent a video message to his supporters on Monday evening, little more than 24 hours after winning the first Grand Prix of his F1 career.

The 23-year-old took the chequered flag in Hungary after McLaren team-mate Lando Norris reluctantly followed orders by allowing him to pass late in the race.

Piastri had earlier led for more than half of the contest, having overtaken Norris inside the opening lap.

Despite the controversy surrounding his win, Piastri was visibly thrilled to have finished on the top of the podium for the first time.

After having some time to allow his achievement to sink in, Piastri took to social media to post a video that he captioned: ‘Trying to put it all into words.. better at driving than talking’.

He began the video by saying: ‘Hey everyone, 24 hours on from a pretty epic moment in my career so far, so I just want to send a quick video or post a quick video saying “thank you for all the support”.

‘Firstly to everyone that was there at the track, I think I said after the race but there was a lot of Aussie flags out there so yeah thanks for all your support from Down Under. Thanks to everyone who cheered me on as well, it was pretty special to be a part of that.

‘I think it’s time to let it sink in a little bit more. It’s kind of hard to take in in the moment, to realise what you’ve accomplished and how long you’ve been waiting for that moment.

‘It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. It’s starting to sink in a little bit more and I’m just very happy.

‘We’ll go again this week, try and get the second one on the board.’

Piastri then gave a special shout out to one fan who had given him a €5 note ahead of Sunday’s race in Budapest.

A video of the fan’s kind gesture went viral before the race after he filmed himself greeting Piastri as he arrived at the racetrack in the passenger seat of a car.

Piastri was reluctant to accept the gift but the excited fan told him: ‘It’s good luck, for real, it’s good luck. Take it, it’s a gift from me. You’re going to win!’

Concluding his video message on Monday, Piastri said: ‘Thank you for all the support and keep it coming. One race win up and an extra five euros. To the fan, you know who you are. You might have to give me five euros every week!’
