Getafe president Angel Torres has claimed that Manchester United have made a decision on what to do with outcast Mason Greenwood amid speculation over his future.

He added that he had also spoken to Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco about the forward.

Mail Sport revealed in April that new minority co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, was working on the assumption that the 22-year-old, who joined the LaLiga outfit on loan in September, would be sold this summer.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022, after he was arrested and later charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. The case against him was dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew.

United had received backlash after speculation emerged that Greenwood could be reintegrated into the squad following an internal investigation by the club. Their leadership team concluded that releasing the player from his £75,000-a-week contract was not an option, but would instead seek a future for him away from Old Trafford.

His contract with the Red Devils will expire in June 2025 and there has been much talk over what his next move will be, with Ratcliffe previously explaining that a decision has not been made on his future as yet, but had implied that the door had been left open for a possible return.

Getafe president, Torres, has now shed some light on the situation and understands that it is Ratcliffe’s intention to seek a permanent transfer for Greenwood.

‘It depends on the parents and the club, I think he will continue another year,’ he said to Radio MARCA.

‘Manchester’s idea is to sell if there is a good offer, we will have to wait. I think he will stay.’

He added: ‘The only ones [representatives] I have spoken to about Greenwood is [Joan] Laporta and Deco, who asked me why he likes it.’

This season, Greenwood has scored 10 goals in 32 matches across all competitions while also returning six assists.

Mail Sport has previously reported that United will not be short of offers for the academy graduate. Lazio are one side who had previously attempted to sign him and could revisit the situation, while Barcelona have also reportedly shown an interest in signing him.

The Athletic had claimed last week that Getafe had opened talks with United over a second loan deal for Greenwood, but it appears United would rather Greenwood secure a permanent transfer away from the club.

Greenwood has previously stated that he was ‘happy’ playing at Getafe and had adapted well to playing in Spain.

‘Everything’s fine,’ Greenwood told Getafe’s official YouTube channel.

‘I adapted pretty quickly. [My] team-mates took me under their wing and I’ve just been happy ever since, coming here and training, playing the games. I’m happy.’

He added: ‘The fans mean a lot to me. The best feeling so far is when I scored my first goal here at the stadium and it meant a lot to me, I heard the fans quite a lot.

‘We had the training day and a lot of fans came out to watch. We appreciate the fans. They’re like an extra man out there on the pitch when they’re there supporting us.’
