Luka Modric has signed a new contract to keep him at Real Madrid for another year.

The midfielder’s current deal ran out this summer, and any negotiations were put on hold because of Modric’s participation in Euro 2024 with Croatia, who exited at the group stage.

He has been with the club since 2012, joining from Tottenham in a £33million deal and he has gone onto win a plethora of accolades with Los Blancos since.

His current total number of appearances stands at 534, while he has netted 39 goals. He has made 178 appearances for Croatia, holding the all-time record for the number of caps for his country.

Following Toni Kroos’ retirement this summer, the 38-year-old has now extended his stay with the club, where he has been confirmed as the new captain, replacing Nacho, for another season.

In an announcement with the slogan, ‘The journey continues,’ Madrid posted on their official website: ‘Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modri have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025.

‘Modric arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his twelve seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend.’

In total, Modric has won 26 titles with Madrid, including six Champions League titles, five Club World Cups, Four Super Cups, four LaLigas and five Copa del Reys.

He is one of only fives players to have won six European titles.

He had formed part of the trio in midfield that became iconic with the modern era at Madrid alongside Casemiro, who left for Manchester United in 2022, and Kroos.

Kroos played his last game in the quarter-final of Euro 2024, where Germany lost against Spain, after announcing he would retire this summer at 34.
