Euro 2024 qualification Permutations: How Netherlands, Wales and Italy can qualify for next year’s tournament… With England already having booked their place in Germany

The qualifying stages for Euro 2024 are drawing to a close, with most teams having just two games left to secure their place at next summer’s tournament.

England booked their place in Germany with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Italy thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford.

But there is still a lot to play for in Group C as both Italy and Ukraine battle for second place and automatic qualifying.

Spain, Scotland, France and Belgium are among the other nations who have already confirmed their place.

Elsewhere, Wales’ win over Croatia means they can still claim a place for 2024 while the Netherlands’ win over Greece put them in the drivers’ seat for second place in Group B.

There is a play-off for those who fail to qualify through the group stage but those were decided by the most recent round of the Nations League.

Mail Sport breaks down the qualifying scenarios for each group and the play-offs.

Group A

Qualification in Group A has been wrapped up, both Spain and Scotland secured their place at Euro 2024 in the most recent round of fixtures.

Spain’s 1-0 win over Norway helped Steve Clarke’s side seal a place in the top two, with both sides winning five of their six games and losing once leaving top spot up for grabs, though Spain currently occupy that place.

Group B

World Cup runners up France secured their place for next summer’s tournament having won all six of their games so far. Scoring 13 goals and conceding just one in the process.

The Netherlands’ win over Greece has put them in the driving seat for second place as they drew level on points with their opponents with a game in hand.

Here are where things get far more complicated for the Republic of Ireland. They can no longer qualify automatically for Euro 2024 but could still make the play-offs.

Bizzarely they need to lose their next opponents – the Netherlands – so that the Oranje qualify automatically, giving Stephen Kenny’s men a chance at making the play-offs through their Nations League position.

Group C

England has qualified for Euro 2024 thanks to their win over Italy, as they remain undefeated in Group C.

Second place is still very much up for grabs in the group though with Italy and Ukraine set to go head-to-head on the final match day of qualifying.

Italy currently occupy third place but hold a game in hand over Ukraine and a win over North Macedonia would see them move into second place, meaning all they would have to do is not lose to their opponents on November 20th.

For Ukraine, if Italy do not beat North Macedonia then all they will need to do is avoid defeat against visitors Italy.

Should Italy beat Ukraine and they end level on points, by way of two wins, Italy would hold the tie breaker of head-to-head record.

Group D

Turkey has qualified for Euro 2024, they currently sit atop the group with five wins, one draw and a single loss.

But the battle for the second qualifying place is wide open in Group D thanks to Wales’ win over Croatia.

That means should Wales beat Armenia and Croatia lost to Latvia, Rob Page’s men will have their place in Germany booked.

Croatia need to win both of their last two games and hope Wales drop points if they are to make it via automatic qualification. Should they finish third they are already guaranteed to make the play-offs.

Armenia have an outside chance of qualifying but need to beat both Wales and Croatia to steal into second place.

Should Poland lose or if Moldova were to beat Albania then they would be eliminated from contention.

Moldova still have an outside chance of finishing in the top two but would need to beat group leaders Albania and second-placed Czech Republic.

Romania top Group I and will qualify for the tournament in Germany if Israel lose to Switzerlan and Romania then beat Israel. Things are a bit more straight forward for Switzerland who just need to beat Israel and Kosovo two games to secure their place.

Should they lose to Switzerland or Romania they will be out of contention but confirmed for the play-offs.
