A look at the Premier League table – across the entire of 2023 – reveals a number of shocking statistics, such as Chelsea’s struggles or Aston Villa’s success.
As the calendar year gradually comes to end, with just one month of football action left, teams will once again be preparing for the January window.
It seems like just the other day when the 2022 World Cup drew to a scintillating end and we saw the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk join the Premier League.
However, since then, plenty has happened. From Newcastle’s impressive Champions League finish and Aston Villa’s up-turn in form to Chelsea’s perpetual struggles in the top-flight, there’s been a lot going on this year.
And the 2023 calendar year table, revealed by TransferMarkt, does well to reinforce that as it revealed some shocking revelations about club’s league form this year.
Chelsea struggles in 2023 see them sit 15th in the Premier League across the calendar year

When looking at the 2023 table, the top four offers a largely contrasting picture to that of the 2022-23 table but relatively similar to the current standings.
From first to fourth, the table reads: Manchester City (82 points), Arsenal (71 points), Aston Villa (71 points) and Liverpool (67 points).
Unfortunately, there’s no place in the top four for this season’s Champions League clubs Manchester United or Newcastle – who are fifth and sixth in the table.
Interestingly, United boast the same amount of points as rivals Liverpool – which is seven more than Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies.
An even more intriguing aspect of the table is Brighton’s high points tally, which is level with Newcastle’s and four points greater than Tottenham’s – who are ninth.
Despite their good fortunes in the early stages of the 2023-24 campaign, Ange Postecoglou can only overturn some of the deficit from their struggles last year.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, there are some – similarly – shocking statistics.
Perhaps the most notable is Chelsea’s 15th-placed position in the table – having picked up just 36 points from their 36 matches in 2023.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle sit 6th in the table despite their success in 2022-23
Frank Lampard won just one out of his 11 games as Chelsea’s interim boss this year
It’s a points tally which places them below the likes of Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Fulham. It’s also just one point above strugglers Everton.
In-fact, excluding the six teams that either got relegated or promoted to the top-flight in summer, Chelsea sit 15th out of 17 teams.
They’ve won just just eight of their 36 matches following struggles for managers Graham Potter and Frank Lampard.
After the Blues, Leicester, Leeds and Southampton all follow on closely ahead of the current crop of former Championship sides Luton, Sheffield United and Burnley.
